Berlin, 15 July (EFE) .- The Frankfurt court this Friday sentenced to five and a half years in prison a German far-right soldier who posed as a fugitive in order to carry out an assassination attempt and blame Muslim immigrants.

“The accused is guilty of preparing a serious act of violence against the state,” said the hearing judge Christoph Koller, as reported by the German media.

Franco A. was accused of planning an attack with right-wing extremist motivations against top politicians and public figures who had in any way supported the refugees during the 2015 crisis.

According to the public prosecutor’s office, the accused posed as a Syrian refugee, applied for asylum in Germany under a false identity and began preparing for the attack.

His arrest took place in February 2017 when a hidden pistol with Franco A.’s fingerprint was discovered in a toilet at Vienna Airport.

During searches after his arrest, police seized four firearms, more than 1,000 bullets and about 50 detonators.

According to the public prosecutor, his targets included the then Minister of Justice Heiko Maas, the Vice President of Parliament Claudia Roth from Los Verdes and the activist Anetta Kahane, founder of the Amadeu Antonio Foundation against extremism.

The accused, who has been at large since preventive detention was lifted in November 2017, had been expelled from the Bundeswehr. The court deducted the three months of imprisonment that had already been served from the sentence announced this Friday. EFE
