When Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyj in Bucha on Monday surveyed the horrors left behind by Russian troops, the last few weeks were hard to see. Dark circles, worry lines, a longer beard. On Twitter, users compared photos of the president shortly before the start of the war with those of Bucha. The difference causes concern for many people.

More than a month of war has left its mark
Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is scarred by war in his country. In the before and after comparison on social media, the circumstances can be seen clearly in his face. The photo on the left shows Zelenskyy on February 23, the day before the Russian attack. In the second photo, the Ukrainian head of state visits Bucha.
Putin’s soldiers had already committed terrible war crimes against the civilian population there. After the Russians retreated, returning Ukrainian forces found several civilians tied up and shot. Such horror images leave no one untouched.
“Atrocities make their presence felt”
“It bothers me when I see this. The atrocities he had to see are noticeable,” wrote one Twitter user. Another says Zelenskyy is “such a loving and caring man. I hope he knows the world is with him.” The tweet received over 400,000 likes and over 75,000 users shared the post on Twitter.
In response to the atrocities in Bucha, the European Commission yesterday proposed new sanctions against Russia. She would like to introduce a ban on imports of Russian coal, closure of ports for Russian ships and other trade restrictions. The 27 EU countries have yet to vote on this. Therefore, it is unclear when the new sanctions might take effect. (yea)
