Ending Premature Cold Calling: How Calls Are Regulated

An official decree was published on Friday that regulates telephone advertising calls.

This news will relieve many French people who can no longer receive unwanted calls from commercial advertisers. From March 1, 2023, advertising calls will be regulated from Monday to Friday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. And banned on weekends, says Le Parisien.

The official decree was published this Friday and contains precise rules. “Until now, when no law has regulated this practice, virtuous advertisers have agreed to contact potential customers Monday to Friday between 9 a.m. and 8 p.m. and Saturday between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m.”, specifies Olivia in the office of Grégoire, Minister for SMEs and Commerce.

The problem is that many unscrupulous call centers have not set the same boundaries. You also need to consider the time difference for those calling from abroad. The number of call attempts is also reduced to four calls.

“With this decree, the French will no longer be disturbed at weekends or at lunchtime. That’s a big step forward,” says the minister. Otherwise, undesirables must be reported to the government’s anti-solicitation site, Bloctel, which some users consider to be ineffective.

That’s a good start, but not enough for consumer groups who wanted a much more restrictive system. UFC Que Choisir launched an online petition to denounce these business practices. In particular, the association wants to “give the consumer the opportunity to identify the telephone numbers in order to be able to block them”.
