The Chicoutimi Saguenéens extended their winning streak to three on Friday night after beating the Cataractes 4-1 in Shawinigan. Former Cats goalie Charles-Antoine Lavallée had the upper hand over his former teammates.

“We don’t often find ourselves in a situation like this. I take that as the swing of the pendulum. I really liked our five-a-side and shorthanded games,” said Sags head coach Yanick Jean.

Chicoutimi got off to a respectable start, but things went downhill a bit after back-to-back penalties, including a four-minute foul awarded to Marc-Antoine Séguin. On their first power play, the Cataractes took the lead thanks to Isaac Ménard. The forward fired a one-off shot that defeated Lavallée.

The Sags showed more character in an eventful second engagement. A fight between Carter Ansems and Éli Baillargeon set things on fire early in the middle period. Marc-Antoine Séguin put the Sags ahead by deflecting Marc-André Gaudet’s shot from the right spot.

The visitors didn’t slow their pace, taking the lead with another man with another net. Émile Duquet saw his throw hit by a player and a post before crossing the red line.

The Sags started into the last twenty by doubling their lead. Man down, Jacob Newcombe scored a third goal for the third game in a row. Marek Beaudoin’s first goal of the QMJHL ended the game in the closing minutes.

It was a very special evening for goalkeeper Charles-Antoine Lavallée. The latter met his former team for the first time after two-and-a-half seasons, winning the 2022 President’s Cup with Shawinigan.

From the first break, the fans gave the 20-year-old veteran a wave of appreciation.

The Sags will play their second away game in 24 hours on Saturday night against the Blainville-Boisbriand Armada.
