German Economy Minister Robert Habeck is campaigning for an increase in arms deliveries to Ukraine. “More weapons must come,” the green politician told the newspapers of the Funke media group (Friday edition). “We cannot leave Ukraine alone in the war. They are also fighting for us. Ukraine must not lose, Putin must not win.”
When asked if Germany was also supplying heavy weapons, the German vice chancellor said: “The people in Ukraine are fighting with courage and a willingness to make sacrifices. We have a duty to support them with weapons. At the same time, we have a responsibility therefore, not ourselves to become a target. This is the framework within which we deliver all that is possible.” That structure “so far does not include large tanks or fighters,” Habeck added.
“Of course, brutalizing war also means you need to increase the quantity and quality of weapons deliveries. But we are discussing this with our European and NATO partners,” the minister continued.
Green and yellow at the traffic light for heavy weapons
Above all, Greens and FDP politicians in the traffic light coalition are pushing for more aid for Kiev, also in the form of heavy weapons. Green politician Anton Hofreiter told RTL: “We finally have to start giving Ukraine what it needs, and that includes heavy weapons.” German Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) has so far expressed reservations about the delivery of heavy weapons to Kiev.
