The authorities are working to avoid an environmental disaster in the region. Right now there would be no fuel accidents

The alarm was immediately sounded because of the danger of an environmental disaster: the oil tanker with 750 tons of fuel went from Egypt to Malta and blocked the sunken coast of Tunisia. This was announced by the Tunisian authorities, adding that they are working to prevent an environmental disaster in the region. Right now there would be no fuel accidents. The spokesman for the district court assured him. The ship sank in Tunisian territorial waters this morning. At the moment there are no casualties, he assured.

The merchant ship Xelo, sailing under the flag of Equatorial Guinea, had come from Egypt to Malta and asked to be allowed to enter Tunisian waters on Friday evening due to bad weather conditions. The seven crew members had been evacuated. While sailing between the Egyptian port of Damietta and Malta, it had begun to take in water about seven kilometers off the coast of the Gulf of Gabe.

In order to avert an environmental disaster, the Tunis Ministry of the Environment announced on its Facebook page that it had activated the national emergency plan in coordination with all ministries concerned. Because of bad sea conditions, the oil tanker Xelo had asked to be allowed to enter Tunisian territorial waters. The crew first approached the Tunisian authorities to obtain permission to disembark. However, seawater flooded the ship’s engine room to a height of two meters and the entire crew was evacuated.
