GAME NOTES | FIVE THINGS TO KNOW – GERMANY

  • USWNT Starting XI Cap Numbers (including this game): Morgan (199), Horan (121), Lavelle (83), Pugh (81), Sullivan (36), Smith (26), Huerta (24), Fox (21), Cook (19), Murphy (11), Germany (9)
  • The line-up against Germany features five different players from the XI who started the USA’s final game against Spain on October 11. Emily Fox, Sofia Huerta and Naomi Girma return on defense while Alex Morgan and Mallory Pugh are back on offense.
  • That starting lineup averages 56 caps per player, with Morgan and Horan being the only players in the lineup with more than 100 caps. Six players – Smith, Huerta, Fox, Cook, Murphy and Girma – come into the game with 25 caps or fewer.
  • Lindsey Horan will be capped for her 121st cap as she captains the USA for the fourth time this year. Horan, starting for the 13th time this year, has played the full 90 minutes in each of USA’s last three games.
  • Casey Murphy will play her 11th career international on her ninth start in 2022. Murphy has seven career shutouts in her 10 caps, the last of which came against Costa Rica in the semifinals of the Concacaf W Championship.
  • Alan Cook will be making her 15th start this year as she will be playing her 19th overall with the USWNT. Cook, who has been named to the NWSL Best XI First Team for each of the past two seasons, leads USA in 1,196 total minutes played in 2022 and has completed 90 minutes in 11 of her 14 appearances this year.
  • defender Sofia Hurta will be making her 15th appearance this year and her 24th cap overall for the United States. After four starts in the first ten games of the year for the United States, Thursday’s game against Germany is Huerta’s sixth start in the last seven games for the United States.
  • Mallory Pugh is back in the US lineup for her 12th start this year, which will be her 81st overall for the USWNT. Pugh leads USA in 13 total goal contributions in 2022, with a team-best seven assists and six goals, finishing second on the roster this year.
  • After a month of being named the youngest MVP in NWSL history and receiving NWSL Championship Game MVP honors after scoring the title-winning goal for Portland Thorns FC, Sophia Smith will be playing her 26th cap as 2022 marks her 16th time as team captain – and her 16th time in the starting XI. Smith, who turned 22 in August, leads USA with 10 goals this year and is on track to become the youngest player to lead USA in a calendar year since Mia Hamm did so in 1993 at the age of 21.
  • Naomi Girma, the first player ever to win both NWSL Rookie of the Year and NWSL Defenseman of the Year in the same season, will be capped for her ninth cap and her eighth start for the USWNT. Since making her USWNT debut earlier this year on April 12, Girma has appeared in eight of America’s last 12 games, completing five 90-minute appearances.
  • Reigning NWSL Golden Boot winner Alex Morgan will earn her 199th cap in Thursday’s game against Germany, making her close to becoming the 13th player in USWNT history to reach the 200 cap milestone. Morgan will start for his ninth and eighth start in 2022 and has scored four of his 119 international goals this year.
  • Rose Lavalle will be making her 83rd cap and her 14th start of 2022. Lavelle has been directly involved in 10 goals in USA’s last 13 games, scoring four – including the crucial header against Nigeria on September 6 – and six further added helps during this period.
  • midfield player Andy Sullivan will be capped for her 35th cap as she makes her 14th appearance – and her 14th start – in 2022. Sullivan is third on the team in total minutes played in 202 with 982 active minutes and has completed the full 90 minutes in four of their last seven appearances for the USWNT.
  • Defender after missing the October 11 game against Spain Emil Fuchs returns to the starting lineup for the USWNT for their 21st international and 13th appearance for the United States in 2022. Fox has played in 16 of America’s 20 games since the October 2021 FIFA window, making 15 starts in that span.
