Kevin Costner admits he has no interest in running for office like Yellowstone’s John Dutton, adding he is “disappointed” with the current state of politics

Kevin Costner’s Yellowstone character John Dutton begins season five, which debuted on Paramount Network Sunday, by being sworn in as governor of Montana … despite the actor himself having no political ambitions.

The 67-year-old actor was asked in a new interview with USA Today if he ever plans to run for office while promoting the show.

Not only did he admit that he had no intention of running for office, he added how “disappointed” he was in today’s politicians.

“No, I don’t think there’s any reason for me to run, although I wish the people who ran had a bigger vision and more morality about how they see the country developing. I’m disappointed,” Costner said.

The actor’s political support spans both major political parties, with the actor backing 2020 Democratic presidential nominee Pete Buttigieg and Wyoming Republican Liz Cheney.

“Just because you lose doesn’t mean you’re done; it doesn’t mean you’re wrong,” he says of his political support.

“It was clear to me that[Cheney]probably wouldn’t win her election. But I wanted to let her, as a citizen, know how much I appreciate her brave, clear stance,” he added.

He acknowledged his various political stances drew criticism from Yellowstone fans, although he wasn’t concerned.

“I didn’t care how the cookie crumbles that people who liked me don’t like me anymore. That’s fine,” Costner said.

As for his character, John Dutton, Costner added that he knew it would be hard for him to leave his beloved Yellowstone ranch once he was sworn into office.

“I know how difficult it will be for him. His heart is with the ranch and he doesn’t try to find middle ground with the people,” said Costner.

“It’s going to be problematic. He has a lane in which he operates that isn’t as expansive as some would like. And he’s not going to change,” Costner added.

Costner also revealed that he originally planned to do just one season of Yellowstone, but he has no plans to leave now.

“I only wanted to do one season, but I’ve done so many,” Costner said.

“I give everything I can for what I do. But the moment I feel like it’s not right, I’ll just step down,” he clarified.
