Carey has been busy promoting her new film She Said, a film about the two New York Times journalists who uncovered the sexual abuse allegations against Harvey Weinstein.
The actress appeared for an interview with Today along with her co-star Zoe Kazan, where they spoke to Megan Twohey and Jodi Kantor, the real-life journalists who covered the story, about preparing for their roles.
“Jodi and Megan have been so generous with us and opened up their lives, not just their professional lives but their personal lives as well,” explained Zoe.

“We’re all working moms and so are they, they let us spend time with their kids and their husbands, but you know a lot of able journalists have tried to get this story before and it just can’t be overstated what a.” Institution like that is The New York Times, which stands behind individual voices, the impact that can have, really uplifting people who wouldn’t otherwise have the same kind of power.
Carey also reflected on the impact of Ashley Judd, one of the first women to publicly make allegations of sexual harassment against Weinstein, appearing as herself in the film.
“From our very first conversation with Didi Gardner, our producer, we knew that so much had gone into developing the script with the survivors and it was obviously a tremendous privilege to have Ashley on board,” she said. “I think the film is really a tribute to female heroism and I don’t think we see that very often on screen and Ashley and the other survivors in the film really epitomize that.”

When asked if they think their new film would make a difference, Zoe said progress is never linear but ultimately feels the coverage drives the needle.
“I think progress is never a straight line, I think we live in a very different world in 2022 than we did in 2017 and that’s partly because of this coverage and because of the Me Too movement started by Tarana Burke, which is really a Lift over…these stories come to light. I think one thing the movie has to say about that is that collective action is important, that even if you don’t feel like you have a strong voice in the sorority, we can gain a lot of power,” she said.
Twohey and Kantor’s investigative work eventually led to uncovering Weinstein’s history of abuse and sexual misconduct with women that allegedly lasted for three decades.
