British actress, 56, head of public library: ‘An institution open to all’
British actress Helena Bonham Carter has been appointed President of the London Library, the first woman to do so since the public library was founded in the English capital in 1841. Bonham Carter, 56, best known for film roles in films including ‘Harry Potter’ Alice in Wonderland, or The King’s Speech, was chosen “for its creativity and connection to literature and storytelling, for its high profile and for its potential to introduce it to new audiences” and for its ability to convey “the importance of writers for the profession of actress”, according to a press release from the institution.
For his part, Bonham Carter, who succeeds Tim Rice, said: “I am delighted to become the first female President of the London Library and to support an institution that is open to all. The library is truly a place like no other, having inspired and supported writers for over 180 years, many of whom have influenced in some way my career and that of actors around the world. The library’s unique resources, history and membership help connect the literary greats of the past with those of the future, and I am proud to support this incredible and vital institution.”
