Courtney Love says she was fired from ‘Fight Club’ after argument with Brad Pitt over Kurt Cobain

Let’s break rule number one and talk Fight Club. That’s because Courtney Love took part in a podcast this Monday (26) and revealed that she had already guaranteed her role in the 1999 film until she had a disagreement with Brad Pitt over a Kurt Cobain biopic. The rocker revealed she was originally set to star in the hit film as Marla Singer a character later played by Helena Bonham Carter.

Speaking to WTF With Marc Maron, Love explained that he “definitely has the role” to star in the cult classic alongside Brad and Edward Norton. She even thinks she suggested the original book to director David Fincher.

However, before filming began, Love received a call from filmmaker Gus Van Sant. The director told her Pitt was very interested in playing Kurt in a biopic about the late Nirvana singer. Since Love is the rocker’s widow, the two sought her approval for the project, which was turned down.

Though she later regretted it, Love said she was “angry” at the time. “Twenty years later, I still regret not having the instinct to say, ‘Sure, and they’re going to fuck themselves later.’ I’m so stupid,” he lamented. Courtney said that after that call, she received a call from the director of Fight Club telling her that she had been kicked from the cast.

The singer admits she wasn’t able to see the film after she was fired, claiming her departure is entirely related to the falling out with Pitt. “By the way, God bless Helena Bonham Carter. she is a genius I have never seen this film. And yes, he fired me because I wouldn’t let Brad play Kurt.”

Years later, in 2020, Love managed to have another conversation with Tyler Durden’s interpreter — and this time it went a lot better. She reported that Pitt wanted to create a biopic of Kurt Cobain through his production company, Plan B. Despite this, she still didn’t approve of Pitt taking the reins of the feature film. However, singer Brad said this with much friendlier language.

She described the conversation: “I had a zoom with him. I said, ‘Listen man. I don’t know if I trust you and I don’t know if your films are forprofit. They’re really good social justice movies, but, you know. I said, ‘If you don’t understand me, you kind of don’t understand Kurt, and I don’t feel the way you do, Brad.’ Anyway, that was it.”

To date, there is no official Kurt Cobain biopic, although Gus Van Sant has directed a feature film inspired by the singer’s life called Last Days. For her part, Love says she wants to see a film about her late husband, but with the right people. Listen to the podcast in full:
