Brieger stresses the urgency of closer EU NATO cooperation

General Robert Brieger, President of the EU Military Committee, expressly welcomed greater cooperation between NATO and the European Union. “While there is room for improvement in the cooperation between the two organizations, the urgency and need for closer cooperation has been widely recognized, particularly in the context of the war in Ukraine,” Brieger told the APA on Tuesday.

It is a “consistent continuation of a chosen path”, underlined the Austrian regarding the third EU-NATO declaration on closer cooperation, signed Tuesday by the parties involved. It’s essentially about the two organizations supporting each other. “Collective defence” will largely remain in the hands of the Western military alliance, while the EU is strengthening its defense capabilities and should be able to take on its own tasks, Brieger explained.
