Royal fans have discovered another inconsistency in Prince Harry’s memoir regarding the outfit Meghan Markle wore on their first date.
In his bombastic biography Spare, which hit shelves on Tuesday, the Duke of Sussex, 38, recounted the moment he first saw his wife when they met at 76 Dean Street in London, one of the private member clubs by Soho House.
Prince Harry wrote of her outfit: “She wore a black sweater, denim heels. I didn’t know anything about clothes, but I knew they were fancy.
However, royal fans on TikTok pointed out that Prince Harry’s account conflicts with a comment Meghan Markle made in a September 2018 interview.
Meghan Markle recalled wearing a blue dress on her first date with Prince Harry during an interview in September 2018 (pictured).
While viewing the dress with a Royal Collections curator, the mother-of-two explained how she wore a blue dress on her first date with Prince Harry.
Ahead of her wedding, the Duchess said she asked for a piece of the gown’s fabric to be sewn into her wedding dress as her “something blue”.
Four months after the couple’s wedding, the Duchess of Sussex was reunited with her Givenchy wedding dress for the ITV documentary Queen of the World.
The Duchess of Sussex then had a piece of fabric from their first date sewn into her wedding dress as her “something blue”.
Taking a closer look at her dress, Meghan said: “There’s a piece in here somewhere – have you seen it?
“The piece of blue fabric sewn inside? It’s my something blue. It’s the fabric of the dress I wore on our first date.”
In response, the curator gushed, “Oh, that’s about the most romantic thing!”
However, it’s possible that Meghan didn’t consider the first time she and Harry met as a ‘date’. Prince Harry goes on to describe how she wore a “pretty blue sundress with white pinstripes” when they met for the second time.
Prince Harry’s bombastic memoir is full of startling claims – and some have questioned the historical accuracy of the facts presented. JR Moehringer (right), Harry’s ghostwriter, defended the book on Wednesday, saying the memoir is about the person’s own view of events

In a viral video that has amassed over 2.1 million views, TikTok user Paula compared the couple’s comments on their first date, saying, “Please do something right!”
In response, one viewer wrote: “Memories may vary…”
Another joked: “Maybe it was midnight blue?”
Prince Harry himself admits in the book that his memory became “patchy” after the death of his mother Princess Diana.
But then he went on to say he could “misremember my own struggles with memory from back then.”
He said: “Most likely my memory, as a defense mechanism, wasn’t recording things the way it used to be.”
At one point, while recalling a trip to the late Queen’s Scottish estate, Balmoral, in the summer of 1997, he explained how he had “crisp” recollection of “landscape, geography, architecture” but with “dates and dialogues’.
However, the prince revealed how the months of therapy appeared to improve his ability to recall memories from the past, including moments with his late mother.
Earlier this week, Prince Harry’s ghostwriter JR Moehringer came out in defense of the Duke after readers highlighted other inaccuracies in his memoir.
Harry has been accused of a litany of factual errors, including claiming he was descended from King Henry VI. ab, claiming he received an Xbox before it was made and stating that Meghan’s father bought a plane ticket from Mexico to London with Air New Zealand, which does not fly that route.
JR Moehringer, who has also written autobiographies for Andre Agassi and Nike co-founder Phil Knight, defended the book, which he was reportedly paid $1 million to write.
Sharing an excerpt from Harry’s book, he stressed that the prince himself sometimes admits he’s unsure of the accuracy of all the details he shares, often saying it stems from trauma in his childhood. But in the same book, he also emphasizes, “It’s important that the story is right.”
Mr Moehringer tweeted Harry’s words last night: “Whatever the reason, my memory is my memory…there is just as much truth in what I remember and how I remember it as there is in so-called objective facts.”
He also tweeted a quote from Mary Karr, author of The Art of Memoir, who said: “The line between memory and fact is blurred, between interpretation and fact. There are unintentional errors of this nature from the Wazoo.’
Moehringer twice won the Pulitzer Prize for Feature Writing before turning to ghostwriting books. According to publisher Penguin, Spare is the fastest selling non-fiction book in UK history.
