Iran has executed a former British-Iranian leader on espionage charges. As the Misan justice portal announced, Aliresa Akbari was killed today. Iran sentenced him to death for leaking secrets. Akbari, his wife and brother vehemently denied the allegations.
He was accused of working for the British secret service. According to the report, Akbari allowed himself to be corrupted for €1.8 million and collected $50,000 (€46,150) for leaking secrets.
In a recording broadcast by the BBC on Wednesday, Akbari said he confessed to crimes he did not commit after being severely tortured. Britain called for Akbari’s release and criticized the politically motivated death sentence.
Iranian media reported on Thursday that Akbari played a role in the 2020 assassination of nuclear scientist Mohsen Fakhrisadeh. A video was also aired in which Akbari claimed he was not involved in the murder. However, a British spy questioned him about Fakhrisadeh. The authenticity of the videos is open.
