There is sun and heat at the start of the Labor weekend. Summer temperatures will kick in Sunday and last through next Thursday, Environment Canada predicts.

The federal agency has issued a special weather bulletin for a portion of southern Quebec ranging from Outaouais and Abitibi-Témiscamingue to Estrie and Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean.

From Sunday, temperatures are expected to be 5°C above seasonal limits. From Monday to Wednesday, days will be particularly hot and humid in western, southern and central Quebec. The mercury could exceed 30°C and have a Humidex value between 35 and 40, Environment Canada warns.

“Heat like this in early September is not common, but it is not unusual either,” said Marie-Lou Payette, a meteorologist with Environment Canada.

Drink plenty of water

On the other hand, given that the last few weeks have not been particularly humid, she notes that Quebecers may no longer be used to the heat. Vulnerable people such as babies, young children, the elderly and pregnant women should limit their outdoor activities and drink plenty of water.

This heat is due to a good weather system developing in southern Quebec and Ontario. This system “pumps” warm air and moisture from the United States, causing temperatures to rise as the days go by.

Rain is expected on Thursday and temperatures are expected to drop again from Friday, says Ms Payette.
