A 43-year-old man was arrested by police in Stockton, United States, on Saturday on suspicion of committing six murders that have rocked this central California city since last year.
Wesley Brownlee, 43, was taken into custody Saturday morning after going “on the hunt” for another possible victim, local police chief Stanley McFadden announced at a news conference.
“He had a murder order,” he told the police officer.
“We are certain that we prevented another murder,” the police officer added, adding that the suspect was carrying a firearm when he was arrested.
Determine the motive of the crimes
In April 2021, a man was executed in Oakland, 50 miles west of Stockton. Then, between July 8 and September 27, five more men were killed in a Stockton neighborhood. These crimes were all committed under somewhat similar circumstances. Finally, a woman survived a gun attack believed to have been perpetrated by Wesley Brownlee. Investigators are still trying to determine a possible motive.
The suspect is expected to appear in court on Tuesday to be charged, local prosecutor Tori Verber Salazar said, adding that her office is reviewing the evidence to determine what charges will be brought against him. “This crime was solved because we are residents of Stockton. Because we don’t come to our senses to rule this kind of terror,” the judge said.
