Ravens nosedive
Baltimore held KC to 17 points and shut them out in the second half. With a defensive performance like that, they can't lose this home game after a season like theirs. Bad penalties, a subpar rushing game, disappointing QB play, key turnovers and a KC defense that deserves a lot of credit have sunk the Ravens.
They can't lose this game, but they lost it. Recovery will be long and arduous.

Road warrior
Well, if one thing could be said about the Chiefs during this tremendous run of success, it would be that they never had to play big road games to reach a Super Bowl. Now they've beaten the Bills and the Ravens, two very difficult football teams, in consecutive weeks.
That's another checked box.
Now they will try to become the first team to win two straight Super Bowls since the Patriots in 2004
And speaking of the Patriots, there's been a lot of talk about Bill Belichick trying to become the all-time leader as a head coach, but here comes Andy Reid, six years younger and with an all-time great quarterback. Reid is certainly in the mix as a Hall of Fame trainer, even more so if he gets another ring in Vegas.

Two minute warning
It's 2nd-and-11, Pacheco rushes a few yards ahead – that's a two-yard gain. Timeout Baltimore – they're all out. 3rd & 9th
Now Mahomes goes back to the pass, he has a man, it's Marquez Valdes-Scantling who makes the catch as he pedals back! It's a first down and then some, and this game is as good as over!

Chiefs 17-10 Ravens, 2:24 4th quarter
The Ravens are finished because there are too many men on the field. Yikes.
On the 1st and 5th someone was offside. Who was it?
No, it's a personal foul on Smith! OK, so now it's 1st and 10th, making it easier to hold Han 1s and 5s. Interesting way to do it, ok.
Pacheco runs on first down and loses a yard.
It's 2nd and 11. Baltimore timeout – they still have one left.

Chiefs 17-7 Ravens, 2:39 4th quarter
Less than three minutes left: On 2nd-and-5, McDuffie breaks up a pass toward Beckham over the middle.
3rd and 5: Jackson, he's patient, throws it away. But a Ravens receiver is pinned and thrown to the ground – no flag!
So try to score a field goal to make it a one-score game.

Chiefs 17-7 Ravens, 3:17 4th quarter
Hill has a catch and is on the KC 30. Defensive tackle Wharton is on the ground for KC – that stops the clock.
So both teams have two timeouts, the Ravens are two points behind. It's doable, crazier things have certainly happened, but the margin for error is thin.

Jackson is fired! And that is not good! It's George Karlaftis, who struggled to recover earlier and now has a sack!
Suddenly it's 3rd & 6…Jackson with the shotgun, small throw to Hill, who shakes the ball and finally makes the catch for a first down. We have less than four minutes left in midfield.

Chiefs 17-7 Ravens, 5:00, 4th quarter
Now that we have a two-point lead, we are definitely in a position to bide our time as Baltimore needs to win the ball back as quickly as possible.
It's 3rd-and-8 on the KC 27 and Baltimore decides to call a valuable timeout, which kind of makes sense.
Reid runs with Pacheco to get some more time, he's missing the first down and here's another KC punt. Happy return to the Ravens 46!
Still a lot of work and so little time.

INTERCEPTION! Chiefs 17-7 Ravens, 6:45 4th quarter
Jackson throws a terrible pass into traffic of all kinds in the middle of the end zone, and Bush, who recently came into the game when Edwards left, makes him reach for KC!
That was so bad of Jackson and smacked of desperation. That should really kill this game.

Chiefs 17-7 Ravens, 6:55 4th quarter
Jackson hits Beckham again and Edwards scores three points for the first hit. The clock stops because Edwards is out due to KC.
This is happening very slowly for Baltimore.
So that helps! Agholor has a 39-yard gain on the other sideline! Suddenly they have arrived at KC 25!

On 3rd and 1, Jackson looks, looks, looks, tries. last second round, but there is no way to get there. Jackson is coming off a loss and it's 4th and 3 at the Ravens 18. They're ready to go for it!
You get the first down! Beckham over the middle. Wow. Now breathe a sigh of relief, Ravens fans!

From there the long road to Baltimore begins. Jackson goes long towards Bateman on the other sideline – he is brought down.
Now he hits Likely on the sideline – 10 yards, first down.
Next play – Odell Beckham, remember him, runs down the field but Jackson rushes him. The crowd wanted a flag, but there was nothing.

It’s 3rd and 13 – that’s HUGE. That's why I used caps.
Baltimore blitzes. It's incomplete! KC will punt.
Baltimore will start with the one! What a boat! Wow!
But other than that, consider how good KC was on offense and how the Ravens shut them down in the second half. This is significant. Imagine the momentum Baltimore would have if Flowers didn't fumble in the end zone?

Now Clowney hits Mahomes late and puts his head down. This makes the passerby rude. Another sloppy flag on Baltimore and it's a cakewalk. This pushes KC into the midfield like they need help.
Baltimore's D has to save this team! That's a start – they release Mahomes, who gets his first playoff sack in four games, according to CBS TV in the US. Madubuike has the bag!

That just bursts the balloon in Baltimore, big time. We were just inches away from a three-point game. And now, well…
…now the Chiefs have done it, and they even converted on a 3rd and 7! Mahomes, to Kelce again.
Meanwhile, Flowers cut his finger after hitting it on the bench following the fumble. There are some anger management conversations that need to be had with Mr. Flowers. First mocking and then hurting yourself is of no use. KC call time, her first.

FUMBLE! Chiefs 17-7 Ravens, 14:52 4th quarter
Jackson finds Flowers diving toward the end zone, but the ball is knocked out by Sneed just before it lands! That's a fumble and a touchback! No reason to challenge this clear KC ball! Oh wow!

Chiefs 17-7 Ravens, late in the 3rd quarter
So what do the ravens say?
Jackson says a lot! A huge blow for Flowers, who is wide open on the opposite side and is finally defeated at the 10!
That's a 54-yard play… reduced by 15 because Flowers stands up and taunts Sneed. Flags are flying! You can't do that! why did he do that?
Man oh man. So the Ravens are at 25 instead.
But Jackson comes right back and finds Flowers again, this time cutting 14 yards down the field!
On the next play, Jackson beats Bateman for a short gain of about two yards. And so the quarter ends.
So Baltimore is on the KC 9 and it's 2nd and 8. Hard to believe that Baltimore can cut this game to three with a TD here, but it's a true story! And that is largely thanks to their defense.

Chiefs 17-7 Ravens, 0:49 3rd quarter
Ravens star Terrell Suggs comes out from under the stadium and tries to cheer on a crowd that doesn't have much to be happy about.
But that helps things a bit: it's already 3rd and 7th.
So Mahomes is in shotgun, getting pushed back toward the end zone by Washington, and the Chiefs QB throws it away! So again: The Ravens defense holds up!
After the punt, Baltimore will try to get its offense going at its own 36 line.

Chiefs 17-7 Ravens, 2:31 3rd quarter
On 2nd and 5, Jackson looks for Andrews – incomplete. And to make matters worse, a waiting call on Simpson puts Baltimore back 10 yards.
On 2nd-and-15, Jackson shotgunned Andrews, who slid into the catch near the sideline.
According to this calculation it is 3rd and 9th place.
Big play – and KC blitzes! Reid locks down Jackson! So Baltimore punts from its own territory all the way to the KC eight-yard line.
Once again, KC's defense holds on to Jackson and Co. And with the 1o-point deficit, the rain and the ticking clock, it seems like it's getting late early in Baltimore.
The Ravens “D” really needs to make something happen.

Jackson throws left and hits Collins, who is thrown out of bounds for an eight-yard gain.

Mahomes turns left, turns right and throws a screen to Pacheco that goes nowhere! Baltimore keeps KC in possession of the ball for the second time in a row. The defense is holding up its end of the bargain, but Jackson and Co. have to get their act together on offense.
The punt goes into the end zone for a touchback. Here comes the offense from Jackson and the Ravens.

Mahomes, like clockwork! He finds Watson running down the field for a first down and a 16-yard gain.
Now KC is at midfield after Valdes-Scantling makes a catch down the other sideline – a gain of seven yards.
Kelce then makes a forward lateral move for a few yards and a first down. This drive is alive and moves quickly.
Baltimore has to play here. Ball on the Baltimore 43.

On first down, Edwards is completely crushed by Reid – no gain.
Then Flowers runs an end-around for four, setting up 3rd and 6.
Jackson throws a terrible shotgun pass that almost was and should have been intercepted by Kansas City. Yuck, that was disgusting.
This is a bad football sequence for Baltimore. They throw it back to KC 21.

We're back, and so is Kelce, who has a catch to bring the Chiefs within three yards of a first down at their own 33 yards.
Mahomes fakes back and throws up a floater, but it is knocked down unfinished. So this is a good start for Baltimore's defense. After the punt, the Ravens start at their own 22.

The numbers
Mahomes: 20/25, 161 yards, 1 touchdown, 106.8 RTG
Loved Kelce: nine catches for 96 yards, 1TD
Pacheco: 14 runs for 41, 1 TD
Jackson: 5/12 67 yards, 1 TD, 1 fumble lost
Flowers: two catches for 39 yards, 1 TD
Jackson: four carries for 27 yards
The big number is time of possession: Chiefs – 20:39, Ravens – 9:21
Baltimore was thoroughly outplayed in its own backyard. The result could have been worse. And yet they are still there!

Chiefs 14-7 Ravens, 0:12 2nd quarter
Rice catches a screen pass and marches into the end zone, but that comes back with a second straight hold call against Smith! Wow! And Smith was nowhere near in the game – bad, bad, bad.
So it's 3rd-and-24 and KC is out of field goal range, all the way back on the 42nd.
You need about eight yards to get into field goal range. Baltimore calls for a time out.

Rice has one catch on an out route, a six-yard catch. He stops the clock by running out of bounds. Now they are in the red zone. It's the 2nd and 4th.
Mahomes with the shotgun, hit while throwing, incomplete looking for Gray. Major third down here.

So if the Chiefs score points here and then come out and score points in the second half, that's not good for the Ravens. So a really crucial journey is coming up.
Pacheco takes a loss and then we have some extracurricular activities with flags flying. Kyle Van Noy, the third man in a minor skirmish for the Ravens, is penalized for unsportsmanlike conduct for tackling and shoving Kelce.
Of course Kelce loves it.
So that doesn't help the Ravens, and Jones' rough passer penalty doesn't help either! Basically he hits Mahomes to the basket and suddenly the Chiefs are close to midfield after 30 yards of stupid penalties.

Mahomes throws deep to Rice, but Hamilton covered him well – incomplete.
It's raining in Baltimore and now it's 3rd and 10.
Mahomes with the shotgun – Hamilton charges from the corner position and Mahomes has to throw it away! The Ravens defense finally shows its sharp beak and forces KC's first punt! And the timing is excellent.
The kick is short, just 31 yards, and the Ravens will have a chance to end this thing with pretty good field position starting at their own 41 yards.
Remember, the Chiefs get the ball after halftime, so Baltimore really needs some points here.

Chiefs 14-7 Ravens, 3:49 2nd quarter
The Chiefs are applying pressure and Jackson can barely get the ball away, so this is an incomplete 3rd & 9 lineup instead of much worse.
But then Chris Jones bats away Jackson's pass and now Stout has to come out for his second punt.
It's a 49-yard kick to the Chiefs 29. The Ravens fail to capitalize on Andy Reid's greed, and now KC has a chance to put their stamp on this first half.

Another catch by Kelce – he's the playoff record holder for receptions – but he misses the first down.
In the 4th and final place, Pacheco runs into the pack – did he make it? It doesn't look like it!
This is a huge play for the Ravens! Andy Reid decides to go for it rather than go for an easy threesome, and he pays the price.
That was really silly. KC just breathed life into the Ravens. What's wrong with a 10-point lead in the AFC Championship?
Gordon Gecko said greed is good. Not in the NFL.

Pacheco starts the drive with a three-yard run up the middle. The Baltimore crowd tries to shore up this beleaguered defense. No luck – Kelce passes Jerry Rice for his 151st catch, one for five yards.
On 3rd and 1, Pacheco goes for the first down while cornerback Arthur Maulet is rattled by the play. He gets out on his own and we continue on the Baltimore 24.
