Afghanistan: At least 16 dead in explosion at Koranic school

At least 16 people were killed and 24 injured in an explosion at a Koranic school in the northern Afghan city of Aybak on Wednesday, hospital sources said.

“They are all children and normal people,” a doctor at a hospital in Aybak, the capital of Samangan province, told AFP on condition of anonymity.

A provincial official confirmed the blast but could not provide a death toll or information about the circumstances.

Since the Taliban returned to power in August 2021, dozens of blasts and attacks on civilians have taken place, most of which have been claimed by the local branch of the Islamic State (IC) group.

According to the UN, 54 people, including at least 51 girls, died in a suicide attack on September 30 in a training center in Kabul that was preparing for university exams.

This attack had not been alleged, but the Afghan government had accused EI-K of carrying out this attack.

Then, on October 5, at least four people were killed in an explosion at an Interior Ministry mosque in Kabul.
