He was later sacked and given a one-year ban by the AFL for repeated breaches.

In 2021, Susan Backshell, who has acted as a mentor to Ben since his last prison stint, told Chron Australia that he remains solely focused on his children.

Sitting in a cold, cramped prison cell for the sixth time in 13 years, Ben decided enough was enough after seven months behind bars in 2020.

He told her he wanted to make amends and clean up his life, and Susan gave him an ultimatum: “Give it your all or forget it entirely.”

Since Ben was released from prison in December 2020, Backshell said she has not once questioned his commitment to sobriety and the betterment of his community.

Susan also said that Ben was always looking for new ways to bond with his children.

“His children are everything to him, he's really a great father.” “He's phenomenal,” said Susan.

“She loves him. They are also very sporty, like him. They're like little mini-me's. You have his determination. I see a lot of him in it.'
