After hearing about anti Semitism: US university president leaves

After severe criticism of her appearance at a Congressional hearing on anti-Semitism at elite US universities, University of Pennsylvania President Liz Magill is taking personal consequences. As the university announced yesterday, the 57-year-old lawyer is stepping down as president. No reason was initially given. She is voluntarily resigning her position but will remain a permanent member of the law faculty, it was said.

Magill was summoned on Tuesday to a US Congressional hearing along with the presidents of Harvard and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), which was also related to the Gaza war and the debate over it.

At the Republican-led Education Committee, Magill and the other presidents were asked, among other things, whether the “call for genocide against Jews” at their universities violated policies on bullying and harassment. The fact that none of the women answered the question with a clear “yes” caused great outrage.
