Amazonia: Indigenous leader Raoni meets Macron in Paris

Days after Brazil first gave the green light to a controversial law stealing land from indigenous peoples, French President Emmanuel Macron met in Paris with “cacique” (tribal chief) Raoni, one of the most prominent faces in the fight to defend the country Amazon and the indigenous peoples. The visit follows a much-anticipated meeting scheduled for later this month, at which proposals to strengthen the so-called ‘green economy’ will be discussed.
“Preserving tropical forests, ensuring respect for the rights of indigenous peoples, that is his life’s work, his fight for humanity,” Macron wrote on Twitter, referring to the 93-year-old Kayapo leader.
“We are attentive to what Cacique Raoni tells us 18 days before the Paris summit about a new global financial pact that the world needs,” added the French leader.
