The ad, which costs just £700 and was created by Charlie’s Bar, a historic pub in Enniskillen, Northern Ireland, features an elderly woman – who only meets on Christmas Day – and a small dog. In the video we see the sad-looking elderly gentleman placing flowers on a grave; Then he is ignored by some young people to whom he tries to be polite. He finally enters the pub, which opened in 1944, where he is warmly welcomed while a young couple and their dog befriend him. The (moving) soundtrack “People Help the People” by Birdy makes everything more emotional and melancholic. The video ends with a quote from William Butler Yeats: “There are no strangers, only friends you haven’t met yet.” According to the British newspaper, the commercial was shot on an iPhone and has been viewed millions of times on social media: Alone on It has already been viewed 2.2 million times on Instagram. The protagonist’s name is Martin McManus, he is 73 years old and a member of a local amateur theater group. “Christmas can be such a joyful time for some and a painfully difficult time for others. “One thing is for sure: you will always receive a warm welcome when you walk through our doors,” reads the restaurant’s description on Instagram.
