Ana de Armas Marilyn Monroe Biopic Lands Rare NC-17 review

Netflix’s highly anticipated Marilyn Monroe biopic Blonde, starring Ana de Armas, earns a rare NC-17 rating, the MPA’s highest rating.

The upcoming Marilyn Monroe biopic, Blonde, has received a rare NC-17 rating from the Motion Picture Association.

According to Collider, Andrew Dominik’s upcoming Ana de Armas movie features the restriction due to “some sexual content”. Netflix confirmed the film will premiere on the streaming platform while also enjoying a limited theatrical run. While the streaming service has yet to respond to the review, many expected Blonde to be affected by the restriction. The film is based on Joyce Carol Oates’ novel of the same name, which contains several sexually explicit scenes.

An NC-17 has been widely considered a “kiss of death” due to the restrictions it imposes on audiences, but the advent of streaming services has prompted a change in attitude towards the restriction. Even traditionally violent franchises like Mortal Kombat have avoided the confinement for fear it might turn away potential viewers.

Though no plot details have been announced yet, Blonde is set to chronicle the life of Hollywood superstar Marilyn Monroe. Despite Oates’ support that her story is largely fictional and should not be considered biographical, many elements of Monroe’s tumultuous life as a successful actor and sex symbol were inspired.

After over a decade of delays, Blonde has been confirmed for a 2022 release. A specific release date is yet to be announced, but fans can expect an update in the coming months.
