“Blessed with Incredible Earnestness”: How Brooklyn Nine-Nine's Andre Braugher Was a Talent Like No Other
When the Emmy-winning actor, who starred in the series Brooklyn Nine-Nine and Homicide: Life on the Street, died on Monday at the age of 61, his representatives said only that he had endured a brief illness, but his publicist Jennifer Allen gave the reason on Thursday.
Braugher generally revealed little about his personal life and his death was unexpected for many of his co-stars. He told the New York Times in 2014 that he had stopped smoking and drinking years ago.
Chicago-born Braugher made his Hollywood breakthrough in the 1989 film Glory, alongside Denzel Washington and Morgan Freeman.
He then played Detective Frank Pembleton, the lead on the NBC police drama Homicide: Life on the Street, for seven seasons. For his work on the show, he would win the first of two Emmys of his career.
Braugher has received 11 Emmy nominations, four of them for the comic role he played as Captain Ray Holt on “Brooklyn Nine-Nine,” the series starring Andy Samberg that ran for eight seasons on Fox and NBC.
