Professor Andrea Margelletti, Russia is struggling to advance and the Ukrainian troops manage to face the offensive: how do you explain that?
“In the meantime, we say that the Russian attempt to escalate the conflict with a quick capture of Ukraine has failed. If the 4872 hour blitz Putin vaunted had happened, the West would have blamed the backlash. How is it possible that the Ukrainians were able to repel the offensive? Simply, they have stateoftheart weapons and, most importantly, military doctrine of the highest level and absolutely uptodate. What the Russians, on the other hand, do not have ».
Explain this aspect to us better: what was missing from the Soviet troops?
«So let’s start with the fact that today’s Ukrainians have not learned any particular military strategy, tactics and doctrine. Since 2014, the West has brought to Ukraine an army, a strategy and an absolutely modern and avantgarde doctrine. The Russians, for example, have highlevel weapons, but they have a doctrine that stopped 50 years ago. For this reason they fight and do not gain ground».
How did Russia plan to conquer Ukraine?
“By two methods: the nullification and physical abolition of the Ukrainian ruling class and the consequent moral collapse of the Ukrainian people. The Russians thought they could do it all in less than 72 hours, but they were wrong ».
what will happen now
“It’s hard to say. For the Russians, losing is not just a military defeat. For the Russians, whoever loses loses everything: even life itself. That’s why Putin must not give up and must save face now. The high risk is an escalation of the conflict».
