An email apparently sent by Andrew Tate has detailed his living conditions in a Romanian prison.
The email describes Tate’s cell as dark and infested with cockroaches and lice.
Tate remains in prison until February 27 as part of a human trafficking investigation.
An email apparently sent from prison in Romania by Andrew Tate described his living conditions in his cell as dark and infested with cockroaches, lice and bed bugs.
“They’re trying to break me,” read the email sent Monday to Tate newsletter subscribers.
“Thrown into a cell with no light. Cockroaches, lice and bed bugs are my only friends at night. When the guards escort me to and from the courtroom, I remain absolutely respectful. They’re trying to pour hate into my heart.”
The email was sent to Tate’s subscriber list but was screen grabbed and reposted several times on Twitter. Excerpts also appear in the British tabloid The Daily Mirror.
Insider contacted the Romanian authorities to inquire about the detention conditions, but did not get an immediate response.
In a December article, Insider’s Charles R. Davis noted that the US State Department had criticized the “inadequate sanitation” and lack of natural light in Romanian prisons. A 2022 report by the European Committee for the Prevention of Torture and Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment found that several prison cells in four different prisons contained cockroaches and mold and had mattresses infested with bed bugs.
In his email, Tate promised to update his fans with “daily lessons from unjust imprisonment” and asks them to “stay with me always.”
He also claims that the guards think he’s “innocent” and “just doing their job, they have families to support.”
“My absolute respect for everyone around me is my act of absolute rebellion,” the emails read. “You can’t break me.”
Tate and his brother Tristan are scheduled to remain in Romanian custody until February 27. The brothers and two Romanian women were arrested last month in connection with investigations into human trafficking and rape.
The story goes on
Prosecutors have accused them of setting up an operation that exploited women and forced them to create content for an online porn website, citing in particular the “loverboy method” – a well-known human trafficking technique in which men use women seduce and manipulate into sex work.
They have all denied the allegations, and Tate, or more likely a representative, defiantly tweeted updates from prison.
“In the dark silence of solitary confinement there is almost no noise,” a recent tweet said. “Pray for me, I can hear you.”
He also tweeted an email address for fans to write to, saying, “You finally allowed me to receive mail.”
