The first official trailer for the highly anticipated film adaptation of Judy Blume’s popular book Are You There God? It’s Me Margaret was shared on Thursday.

In the clip, Hollywood heavyweights Rachel McAdams, 44, and Kathy Bates, 74, can be seen joking. The coming-of-age adaptation also introduces 14-year-old newcomer Abby Ryder Fortson as Margaret.

The two-minute promotional preview begins with a nod to the novel — originally published in 1970 — with a subtitle that reads, “For over 50 years, an iconic book has linked generations.”

It continues, “It’s finally coming to the big screen,” while also addressing a private moment in which Fortson’s character, Margaret, awkwardly gazes at her reflection in a full-length mirror.

Fortson can be heard in voiceover reciting the line of the same name: “Are you there, God? It’s Margaret.”

Next, she sits in a lecture hall with her classmates as they settle in for a health class focused on their “changing bodies.”

Her role: Rachel plays Barbara Simon, the mother of 11-year-old Margaret, in the upcoming feature film

The pre-teens are visibly concerned when they learn about puberty and menstrual cycles via a projector.

As B-roll from various scenes flicker across the screen, the voiceover continues with Margaret pleading, “Please do just this one thing for me.”

The main character is then shown on her knees with her hands in a prayer position as she prays: “Just let me be normal and normal like everyone else. Just please, please, please, please…’

Kelly Fremon Craig wrote and directed the film, with the blessing of Judy, who is now 84.

The trailer’s soundtrack is the upbeat, guitar-driven 1970s song What Is Life by George Harrison.

Another clip shows Margaret blushing as a young boy with a short, curly afro while he mowed the lawn, highlighting one of life’s relatable blossoming moments.

Then a dialogue between the young girl and a friend leads to the character setting off to get her first bra.

“I’ve decided I want you to join my secret club. If you want to be in the club, you have to wear a bra,” demands the girlfriend.

Margaret’s face floods with embarrassment as she works up the courage to ask her mother, Barbara (Adams), for permission, only for her to reply, “Think you need one?”

This all takes place after Margaret abruptly moves away from New York City, leaving her beloved grandmother (Bates) behind.

She and her mother relocate to the New Jersey suburbs, where they both struggle to adjust to a new environment and a new way of life.

are you there god It’s Me, Margaret was a breakthrough bestseller and was named New York Times Outstanding Book of the Year in 1970.
