Mixtapes has been in full swing for a year and the event will take over the PHI Center in Old Montreal in 2024, an event put together by that venue’s founder and director, Phoebe Greenberg, who works closely with one of the director’s two sons, Alex.

We chose this title “Mixtapes” because Jean-Marc Vallée enjoyed sharing lists of songs with his family, friends and collaborators, as music was at the center of his daily life and creative process.

In an interview in Venice for the screening of CRAZY – whose restoration was overseen by Jean-Marc Vallée before its sudden disappearance on December 25, 2021 – the head of new media and PR partnerships at the PHI Center, Myriam Achard, explained that Mixtapes do will take up “a lot of space” in the PHI Center when it is presented next year.

The curious can watch two short films by Jean-Marc Vallée, artifacts and souvenirs, as well as hear testimonies from friends and collaborators and listen to plenty of music to honor the memory of this great Quebecer, behind the series Big Little Lies and Sharp Objects as well the films Dallas Buyers Club, Café de Flore and Liste noire, to name just these titles.

It was clarified that mediation and satellite programming, including round tables, will further enrich the experience for Mixtapes attendees, who will also be entitled to a musical program with intermittent performances as well as the presence of an immersive listening room, it was clarified.

“We thought it would be a great opportunity to announce mixtapes in Venice, but the PHI Center goes there every year because there is a wide range of virtual reality works. It is one of the largest festivals for the virtual reality and immersive community. Works that we discover in Venice often end up later at the PHI Center,” said Ms. Achard, recalling that CRAZY began its international journey in 2005 during the Giornate degli Autori (Venice Days).

Phoebe Greenberg from the PHI Center attended the screening along with Jean-Marc Vallée’s sons, Alex and Émile, as well as producers Pierre Even (Item 7) and Richard Speer (Attraction).

Note that this presentation of CRAZY was organized by SODEC in collaboration with the Quebec delegation in Rome and with the support of MELS.

Quebec will also be appearing at the Venice Film Festival in the coming days.
