A terrorist with an explosive belt, believed to have traveled from Lebanon, planted a roadside bomb before being shot dead
Israeli authorities on Wednesday released details of an attack on Monday at the Megiddo junction in northern Israel when a roadside explosion seriously injured one person and caused a power outage in the area. The attack is the work of an armed terrorist who allegedly came to Megiddo by car from Lebanon and therefore drove on Israeli territory for almost an hour and a half.
After the attack, the man, whose nationality was not disclosed, stopped a car and asked the driver to drive him north. The terrorist, who was wearing an explosives belt, was eventually intercepted on Route 899 near Moshav Ya’ara, just a few kilometers from Lebanon, before being shot dead by Israeli security forces, Israeli security forces said on Wednesday the military and the Shin with Bet in a joint statement.
Security services have speculated that the terrorist entered Israeli territory from Lebanon and attempted to return. Despite this incident, the authorities did not give any specific instructions to residents of the north of the country. On the other hand, the alert is highest at the northern border because authorities do not know how this man managed to cross the security fence.
Israeli security services believe the terrorist intended to carry out two attacks: one with the roadside bomb he planted, which exploded and injured one person, and the other with the explosive belt and gun he was carrying. However, many questions remain unanswered, including why the man went to Meggido before planting his bomb. According to the security services, the planting of a roadside bomb is a completely different operation from the well-known terrorist attacks by Israel in the West Bank, and the suspicion is an infiltration of the Lebanese terrorist movement Hezbollah.
