The United States reportedly warned Iran of a terrorist threat to the country a week before the attacks in Kerman next to Soleimani's grave.
“Before the terrorist attack by ISIS [Autoproclamado Estado Islâmico] “On January 3, 2024, the United States government in Kerman, Iran, sent a private warning to Iran that a terrorist threat existed within Iran's borders,” a source close to CBS News explained.
“The US government follows a longstanding policy of 'duty to warn' that has been implemented across all governments to alert governments to potentially deadly threats,” he told the US publication.
According to the same source, these warnings are being issued “in part because we do not want innocent people to die in terrorist attacks.” The Iranian government has not yet responded to a CBS inquiry on the matter.
The North American executive also denied having discussed the situation or stated when this warning was delivered and what precise information was provided. It also did not say whether there was a response from Tehran, and the publication was unable to determine whether any action was taken by the Iranian government as a result of the alleged warning.
The double bombing of Qassem Soleimani's grave killed 84 people who were in the south of the country to mark the anniversary of the general's death.
The day after the attack, the selfproclaimed Islamic State claimed responsibility. This week, Iran announced the deaths of two suspects in the attacks.
Soleimani was assassinated in Iraq in 2020 on the orders of thenPresident Donald Trump.
