Axl Rose has promised to stop throwing his microphone into the audience after a fan was allegedly injured during a show in Australia.
The Guns N’ Roses singer, who celebrated his 60th birthday this year, routinely ended his shows by offering front-row viewers a chance to catch his mic.
However, during a show at the Adelaide Oval on Tuesday, Rebecca Howe was struck in the face by the object, according to Australian media reports.
Addressing the incident on Twitter, Axl Rose wrote: “If that’s true then obviously we don’t want anyone to get hurt… at any of the r shows anywhere (sic).
“Having thrown the mic at the end of r shows for over 30 years, we always felt that this was a familiar part of the performance at the very end of the r that fans wanted and knew they had the opportunity to do have to catch the microphone.
“Regardless in the interests of public safety, from now on we will refrain from throwing microphones or anything similar to fans during or during performances.”
Rose said some people have tried to “frame” their coverage of the incident in a “negative and irresponsible light out of thin air,” which he says couldn’t be further from the truth.
He concluded, “A big thank you to everyone for understanding.”
The Adelaide incident reportedly happened during the band’s final song, Paradise City.
Photos of Howe released to local media appear to show her with bruises under her eyes and cuts on the bridge of her nose.
Guns N’ Roses will be headlining next year’s British summer festival in Hyde Park for the first time.
The US rockers – with singer Rose, guitarist Slash and bassist Duff McKagan – will be on Friday, 30.
