It’s not always a good idea to post your selfie while on vacation. Just before spring break, an insurance company is launching an awareness campaign, noting that burglars are very active and vigilant on social media.
According to a survey by Allstate Insurance, 46% of 18-34 year olds post on social media while on the go.
36% of households with children are active on these platforms before or during the trip.
They unwittingly inform potential burglars of their absence.
“We’ve seen an increase in home insurance claims on social media,” said Dominique Vaillancourt, agency director at Allstate. “When people leave, they take less precautions with geolocation, for example. They communicate when they are going and how long the journey will take.”
“I am aware of the danger, but if I go I will still publish on the networks,” explains a citizen who met our journalist Cloé Hudon. “I will take precautions.”
Some tips can also be used on the go. In particular, we can ask a neighbor to guard our house, for example to clear our driveway.
Of course, insurers recommend waiting for the return trip before posting photos on social networks.
