White House National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan said this Saturday (20) that United States President Joe Biden wants to meet with President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) to discuss during the G7 summit on the War in Ukraine Talk Summit in Hiroshima, Japan.

The President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy also suggested a bilateral meeting to Lula during the summit of heads of state and government in Japan.

Lula’s schedule published by the Brazilian government for Sunday (21), the last day of the meeting, does not include a meeting with the US President.

Alongside Lula, Sullivan said Biden also wants to speak to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the same topic. Modi met with Zelesnky on Saturday. The Ukrainian President called on the Indian government to abandon its neutral position and to recognize Russia’s violation of Ukrainian territory.

This Saturday (20) Lula met with French President Emmanuel Macron and German Prime Minister Olaf Scholz.

With Macron, Lula discussed the armed conflict between Russia and Ukraine, the preservation of the Amazon region, which includes France with the overseas territory of French Guiana, and the war in Ukraine.

“Renewed meeting with the President of France, Emmanuel Macron, at the G7 summit. We talked about preserving the Amazon and ways to create peace in Ukraine. We resume friendship and partnership between our countries, we can do many things together,” Lula wrote on a social network.

Without giving further details on the content, the Brazilian government said in a note that the heads of state and government had discussed defense in addition to the conflict in Ukraine. According to the government, the two presidents also discussed topics such as space travel, nuclear energy, sustainable development and expanding cultural exchanges.

Information about Zelenskyy’s invitation was confirmed by Itamaraty to TV Globo. However, there is still no confirmation of the date of the possible meeting.

When asked this Saturday (20) about a possible meeting with Zelenskyy, President Lula replied that he did not know if the meeting would take place.

The meeting is also not included in the agenda published by the Brazilian government.

Lula visited Biden in February

At the meeting in the White House, the seat of the US government, the two spoke about the need to strengthen democracy in the countries and discussed environmental partnerships to tackle the climate crisis.

Speaking on a social network this Saturday, Lula commented on his visit to the United States: “I’m returning to Brazil after a great meeting with President Joe Biden in the United States. Zelenskyy calls for support

In his meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, he called on the country to oppose the Russian invasion of Ukraine. The country has maintained a neutral stance in the conflict and has refused to condemn the Russian invasion.

“I spoke about Ukraine’s need for demining and mobile hospitals. I thank India for supporting our country’s territorial integrity and sovereignty, particularly on the platforms of international organizations, and for providing humanitarian assistance to Ukraine.”

Modi told Zelenskyy that he was ready to help and that for him the war was “a matter of humanity and human values.”

The war in Ukraine is one of the main themes of the G7 meeting attended by the United States, Japan, Germany, the United Kingdom, France, Italy and Canada. Other countries such as Brazil were also invited to take part in the meeting.

Brazil in the G7

Lula attended the meeting, titled “Working Together to Address Multiple Crises.” During the speech, the President recalled that he had been invited to the G7 meeting for the seventh time, which was attended by the United States, Japan, Germany, the United Kingdom, France, Italy and Canada.

The petista criticized the protectionism of the rich countries and said there was “a weakening of the multilateral trading system”.

“The World Trade Organization remains paralyzed. Nobody remembers the development round. The challenges have piled up and gotten worse. With every threat we don’t face, we create new urgencies,” he said.
