Bike paths in winter: The city of Montreal debunks a myth –

The city of Montreal has been under fire since recent snow accumulations, accused of prioritizing bike path maintenance over sidewalk maintenance. His administration spokesman wanted to remedy the situation.

The metropolis has 6,000 kilometers of sidewalks, 4,000 kilometers of streets and 700 kilometers of cycle paths.

These three streets require separate maintenance, assures the City of Montreal.

“Many people ask the question: 'How is it possible in Montreal that the bike paths are cleared of snow first?'” emphasized Philippe Sabourin at a press conference on Friday.

Although he understands that Montrealers are asking this question, the city of Montreal's administrative spokesperson confirms that it is a myth.

The latter states that the maintenance of sidewalks is more difficult than that of cycle paths and that the machines used are not the same.

“[Les trottoirs] it is a white material. It is a material that does not retain heat, such as: ''Ice pack'' . Asphalt is a hot material, like a magic bag. It holds the heat, so it’s easier to work with and the salt works quicker,” he says.

The sidewalks are cleared of snow with snow groomers, while the cycle paths are cleared with four-wheel drive vehicles.

“If we stopped using our four-wheel drives to clear bike paths, we wouldn’t be able to send the four-wheel drive to the pavement. It's not working!” he says.

Mr. Sabourin added that all snow removal equipment operators “leave at the same time.”

He recalled that these workers have to juggle obstacles on sidewalks and roads as well as the whims of Mother Nature.

The teams are not idle

While 50% of the snow load was carried out before the weekend's second low pressure system, the city of Montreal will gradually resume this type of operation.

Parking bans are expected on Sunday and in the coming days.

“We immediately ask you to be vigilant and look outside [pour savoir] when an operation is currently in progress. If an operation is taking place in your district and the pavement is unacceptable, do not hesitate to contact the city,” recommends Philippe Sabourin.
