“The Hell of Hate”
7:35 p.m., TCM
Tengoku to Jigoku. Japan, 1963 (143 minutes). Director: Akira Kurosawa. Cast: Toshiro Mifune, Yutaka Sada, Takashi Shimura, Yoshio Tsuchiya.
A new masterpiece by Akira Kurosawa, framed by two works of the caliber of Yojimbo and Barbarossa. On this occasion, the great Japanese filmmaker enters the world of thrillers to reflect on the loss of fundamental values in Japan in the 1960s. “The Hell of Hate” is one of the director’s least popular works, but many North American thrillers appreciate not only the enormous talent that radiates from his direction, but also its severity, its intensity and its frenetic narrative rhythm. The viewer is amazed at an exemplary script that depicts the kidnapping of a tycoon’s son. If he wants to get him back, saving him will bankrupt him, so he has to fight between his son and his greed.
‘Arctic’
10 p.m., Paramount Channel
Arctic. Iceland, 2018 (97 minutes). Director: Joe Penna. Actor: Mads Mikkelsen.
After a plane crash, a man struggles to survive alone in the Arctic. With such an approach, Joe Penna achieves a narrative masterpiece of almost ascetic intent, because his proposal will be to strip the story of any narrative content. And take the action completely out of context so that only the here and now matters.
