Brazil have formalized their return to Celac ahead of Argentina

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the neighboring country’s ambassador, Reinaldo José de Almeida, handed over the document in Cafiero today, eleven days after the inauguration of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

In this way, Brazil is returning to Celac following former President Jair Bolsonaro’s January 16, 2020 decision to suspend its participation in the mechanism, the ministry said in a statement.

He also stressed that in this way the body regained its 33 members.

Cafiero and De Almeida also spoke about Lula’s visit to the country, scheduled for the 23rd of this month, during which he will meet President Alberto Fernández.

The Labor Party leader will also take part in the VII Summit of Celac Heads of State and Government, which will be held a day later.

On the other hand, the Brazilian ambassador thanked the Argentine government for denouncing the attacks carried out by Bolsonaro supporters on the headquarters of the National Congress, the Supreme Court and the Planalto Palace of the South American giant.

Argentina has held the pro-tempore presidency of Celac since early 2022, and Brazil’s reintegration has been celebrated by that nation and other member states.
