BRASILIA, Jan. 8 (Xinhua) — Brazil's President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva reaffirmed on Monday that Brazilian democracy prevailed and was strengthened, a year after the attacks on the headquarters of the three branches of government in the city of Brasilia.
Lula da Silva brought this up in the article distributed by the Presidency entitled “Brazil has foiled a coup attempt. “What we have learned”.
The Brazilian president stated in the text that “the resilience of Brazilian democracy has been severely tested.”
“Fortunately, the coup attempt failed. “Brazilian society has rejected the invasions,” Lula da Silva said, adding that over the past year the executive branch, Congress and the Supreme Federal Court (STF) “have devoted their efforts to clarifying the facts and facts.” Do that Intruders held accountable.
“This coup attempt was the culmination of a long process driven by extremist political leaders to discredit democracy for their own benefit,” he added.
According to Lula da Silva, improving people's lives is the best answer against “extremists”.
“In recent decades, an exclusive economic development model has led to income concentration, fostered frustration, diminished workers' rights and fueled distrust of public institutions. Inequality serves as fertile ground for the spread of extremism and the exacerbation of polarizing politics,” he noted.
“When democracy fails to provide people with well-being, extremists promote denial of politics and disbelief in institutions,” he reflected.
“Strengthening democracy depends on the ability of states to address structural inequalities and promote people’s well-being, but also on the ability to make progress in combating the factors that fuel violent extremism,” he noted.
On January 8, 2023, supporters of former President Jair Bolsonaro (2019-2022) invaded the headquarters of the three branches of government in Brasilia and caused severe property damage, which the STF described as an attempted coup.
Lula da Silva will lead an event in defense of democracy in the country's capital this Monday, together with representatives of Congress and the STF. End
