Bridgerton actress Adjoa Andoh left her ITV co-stars stunned yesterday as she described the Buckingham Palace balcony as “awfully white” during her live coverage of the coronation.

Commenting on her programme, which was hosted by Tom Bradby and Julie Etchingham, the star, whose father was of Ghanaian descent, said of the event for the network: “We walked from the rich diversity of the abbey to a horribly white balcony.

“That impresses me a lot.

“I also look at these younger generations and think, ‘What nuances will they inhabit as they grow up?’

She said:

She said: “We have walked from the abbey’s rich diversity to a horribly white balcony. “It touches me very much”

Ms Andoh, 60, who plays Lady Danbury on the Netflix show, made colleague Myleene Klass – who was sitting next to her – look confused as she made her comments.

The clip, which was widely circulated on Twitter, sparked a backlash from Ms Andoh. One user said, “Why is it okay to fire a white family because they’re white?”
