Bungalow: A deliciously squeaky dark comedy

The American dream absorbs its coldness bungalowa scathing black comedy starring Guillaume Cyr and Sonia Cordeau as a couple who find themselves in financial difficulties after undergoing overpriced renovations.

When Sarah (Sonia Cordeau) and Jonathan (Guillaume Cyr) get their hands on a small bungalow in disrepair, they think they’ve found the rare gem they can turn into the home of their dreams. But by trying to avoid overspending, the young couple won’t take long to string together their worst decisions.

So after the new owners wanted to save money by refusing a home inspection (major mistake) and decided to live in the house while the work was done (another major mistake), the new owners will decide to consider renovating their bathroom to entrust bathing to a friend of Jonathan’s who isn’t very good at plumbing. Realizing that this friend isn’t the right person for the job, Sarah and Jonathan eventually turn to a true professional (Ève Landry), which inevitably sends their bill skyrocketing. This new reality will make the two lovebirds (Jonathan in particular) sink even deeper into debt and see their (American) dream turn into a real nightmare.

Behind closed doors

After directing more than forty short films and a first feature film (Écartée, out 2016), director Lawrence Côté-Collins delivers Bungalow, a snappy and delightfully offbeat comedy unlike anything filmed in Quebec.

By shooting her film behind closed doors, the filmmaker was able to create a frightening climate that allowed her to enjoy the codes of horror cinema in a totally fragmented universe with touches of kitschy.

Even if the characters of Sarah and Jonathan are confronted with completely absurd and delusional situations, Sonia Cordeau and Guillaume Cyr decided to embody them while keeping a serious tone, thereby managing to make them lovable. Cyr also moves particularly well in a karaoke scene that is as touching as it is surprising
