Millions of families benefiting from the CalFresh program will soon see a reduction in the money on their debit cards. CalFresh cards support grocery shopping, a measure implemented since March 2020.
His main goal back then was to help people amid the crisis caused by the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. As with the rest of the world, California families have faced various difficulties due to the pandemic. For this reason, the above-mentioned emergency contributions were approved.
For nearly three years, the benefit increase for these families was at least $95.00. This was announced by the California Department of Social Services (CDSS).
However, this support will soon be limited, and the reduction of money on the cards will be reflected from the month of April. Because of this, families will need to adjust to the program’s new income as they see the impact of significant discounts on their cards.
According to the law that allowed these people to receive an increase in CalFresh benefits, it would end in February 2023.
How much will the benefit reduction of the program be?
The average amount estimated by the authorities is at least $95.00 as of April this year. However, the exact amount depends on the aid each family receives from CalFresh based on eligibility criteria.
The California Association of Food Banks estimated that cutting CalFresh benefits would average $200.00 per family. The amount of money would vary based on the eligibility of the family nuclei and their respective current levels.
