According to a ministry statement released on Saturday, General Eyre has received detailed information from members of the General Staff of Ukraine’s Armed Forces, including his counterpart, General Valery Zaluzhny.
He also met Ukrainian soldiers, some of whom had been trained as part of Operation UNIFIER, which trains Ukrainians in Britain and Poland.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced late last month that Canada would be donating four additional Leopard 2 main battle tanks to help Ukrainian forces defend against invading Russian forces, further increasing Canada’s contribution to a total of eight tanks.
He will also donate an armored recovery vehicle and more than 5,000 ammunition.
According to the statement, General Eyre “monitored the tangible results of Canadian assistance” and discussed “the contribution of Canada and the Canadian Forces to meeting Ukraine’s future needs”.
“During his meeting with General Valeri Zaluzhny, General Eyre reiterated the Canadian Armed Forces’ unwavering commitment to maintaining solidarity with Ukraine and pledged to continue to support Ukraine directly or in cooperation with allies in Eastern Europe,” the statement said, adding added that the general was touched by his encounters with the military.
“Their courage, resourcefulness and determination as they continue to valiantly fight for their sovereignty against the Russian armed forces humbled and inspired him. »
The Chief of Staff also met with Canadian Ambassador to Ukraine Larisa Galadza to exchange views from Ottawa and Kyiv.
