CTOs explain this trend

This year, the F1s will be painted sporty with lots of carbon, the teams want to save money and reduce the weight of the single-seaters. The technical managers of the teams explain why this somewhat ugly trend has become logical.
“I think we’ve made a big effort this year to bring the car back to the weight limit,” said Pat Fry, Alpine F1’s Chief Technology Officer. “Of course, having less paint or less film helps, no matter what version you use.”
“We’re under weight now so weighting for us I think we could have a little bit more pink or blue. But of course that’s a key differentiator, and if you’re overweight you just need to remove everything you can. “
However, Mike Elliott, the Mercedes F1 director, notes that teams are only making marginal gains with this process: “I think we’re in the small wins now. I think if you look at the weight of these cars in terms of paintwork, it’s not huge, but every little thing counts.”
Having maintenance issues? “And if you can get a little edge there, do that. In terms of how they look and develop after they’ve been sandblasted, like you said, pure carbon might be harder to deal with than paint, but we’ll see it done.”
Dan Fallows, Aston Martin technical director, agrees with Elliott that teams are looking to shed some crucial pounds, but also to save money: “You like the small gains, but in terms of paint cost, it is “that’s good point. It’s something I haven’t given much thought to, but it’s a good point.
