Case Maddie: A German claims to be the missing girl, an AI draws robot portraits for the Co

Madeleine McCann, the British girl, disappeared on May 3, 2007, a few days before her fourth birthday while she was staying at a hotel in Portugal. For a week, a young German girl claims to be Maddie. But is there a resemblance between the two girls? An AI tries to answer.

There are cases that are never closed. In particular, those of children have never been found. This is the case of the disappearance of little Madeleine McCann, whose case has had many twists and turns since 2007. Finally, a young German woman living in Poland doubts her identity and believes she could be Maddie.

The Robot Portrait Test

For weeks, the young German has been asking the investigators to study her trail and subject her to a DNA test, to no avail. This isn’t the first time a young girl has claimed to be the missing child. So she decided to post her story publicly on social networks. To back up her words, she posted all sorts of photos showing her similarities to Madeleine: face shape, dimples, birthmarks…

But is the resemblance so striking? To find out, Catalan media outlet La Vanguardia went so far as to use artificial intelligence (IA Stable Diffusion) to simulate portraits of Madeleine, who would be 19 today, reports L’Indépendant.

“The truth is that the images created by the artificial intelligence look a lot like the girl claiming to be Madeleine. The shape of the eyes and eyebrows and the thick lips are an obvious commonality. They also match the hair color and certainly facial expressions that still raise doubts as to whether Julia is the real Madeleine.”
