The search for survivors intensified this Monday (22) in Yunnan Province, southwest China, after a large landslide occurred early this morning. According to Chinese state media, at least 47 people were reported missing.

Rescue operations underway

Images released by state broadcaster CCTV show emergency teams searching through the rubble: destroyed concrete blocks and broken branches. The landslide, which occurred at around 5:51 a.m. local time, shook the city of Zhaotong.

In response, local government authorities activated an emergency plan to provide humanitarian assistance to those affected. Around 500 people had to leave their homes due to the impending danger.

Uncertain causes

There is still no official information about what caused this landslide. However, it is worth noting that Yunnan province, as well as other regions in the south of the country, is currently experiencing an extreme cold wave with temperatures near or below freezing, according to the National Meteorological Center.
