A man charged with murder fled the courthouse shortly before his trial at the Washington County Courthouse, Oregon. The suspect ran after being freed from the handcuffs and escaped within seconds.
Edi Villalobos, 28, is accused of murdering a man, seriously injuring another and stabbing a third person.
Villalobos was arrested on April 10, 2021 and was due to appear in court on February 27 this year when he managed to escape.
Surveillance cameras recorded the moment of escape. In the video, he enters the courtroom accompanied by two police officers who remove his handcuffs. US state law requires them to be removed for the hearing.
Immediately after his release, he ran to the living room door, walked out into a hallway, opened another door, and headed for the exit. Two police officers run after them, but the criminal gains a great advantage in the race.

The fugitive was sighted twice by authorities after the incident, but in both cases he was not caught. Police mobilized two police stations to search and also used K9 drones to locate him.
An anonymous complaint from a condominium resident said a man tried to force entry into one of the apartments when he went to investigate, Villalobos was wrapped in a blanket to hide.
Court Communications Sergeant Danny DePietro said he expects the suspect to remain handcuffed at the next hearing once he’s arrested again.
“But going through this process is a matter for the courts, prosecutors and court security,” Depietro added.
