According to Portal, a Chinese military statement said the guided missile destroyer USS Milius entered China’s territorial waters, undermining peace and stability on the busy waterway.

A military spokesman also said the armed forces would remain vigilant and “take all necessary measures to safeguard sovereignty, national security, peace and stability in the South China Sea.”

On the other hand, the US Navy said it was conducting routine operations and the US ship had not been expelled from China, Portal reported.

“The United States will continue to fly, sail and operate where international law permits,” the US Navy’s 7th Fleet said in a statement.
