Chinese capital on alert for high air pollution

Beijing, Oct. 30 (Prensa Latina) The orange warning for high air pollution remains in effect in the Chinese capital today, which is why authorities advise avoiding outdoor activities.

According to the Environmental Control Center, the warning is valid until November 2nd.

Although China has made progress in controlling air pollution in recent years, episodes of high air pollution occur particularly as winter approaches due to the burning of coal to heat homes.

The orange warning represents the third highest warning level on a four-color scale.

According to mobile air quality monitoring applications, PM2.5 particle levels reached 235 micrograms per cubic meter the previous day, while the World Health Organization assures that the human body should be exposed to only 25 micrograms per cubic meter in a period of time. 24 hours to avoid health effects.

The orange alert includes restrictions on construction activities, reductions in emissions from factories and power plants, and increased monitoring of pollution sources.

Air pollution in China increased in the first half of this year even as carbon dioxide emissions fell significantly, the Ministry of Ecology and Environment announced.

On the other hand, the Asian giant’s forest cover rate increased significantly to 24.02 percent and the forest cover already reaches 19.49 million cubic meters, exceeding the country’s 2025 target.

Although China has announced that it will achieve carbon neutrality before 2060 and to achieve this goal it is prioritizing the use of clean energy, it must be taken into account that other main sources of air pollution are emissions from cars, ships and construction equipment.
