A secret report from the United Kingdom said 55 Chinese sailors died in a nuclear submarine in August after the ship became stuck in the Yellow Sea. The document was obtained by the Chron newspaper and the information was published on Tuesday 3rd.
According to the report, the sailors died after a catastrophic failure of the submarine’s oxygen systems poisoned the crew.
“Intelligence reports indicate that an accident occurred on board on August 21st [o submarino] “conducted a mission in the Yellow Sea,” the document said. The sinking is believed to have occurred in the waters off the Chinese province of Shandong.
“The incident occurred at 8:12 a.m. local time and resulted in the death of 55 crew members: 22 officers, seven cadets, nine petty officers and 17 sailors. Among those killed is Captain Colonel Xue YongPeng. We understand that.” Death was caused by hypoxia [ausência de oxigênio para as células do corpo] due to a system failure on the submarine,” the report continued.
According to the newspaper, the submarine had encountered a “chain and anchor obstacle used by the Chinese Navy” to trap U.S. and allied ships.
Beijing reportedly refused to seek international assistance for the submarine. However, China denied that the incident occurred.
