AGI – To first welcome the year 2024, at 11am (Italian time) they are absolutely the residents of Christmas Island, located in the Indian Ocean south of Indonesia. The first European to see the island was Richard Rowe of Thomas in 1615. The island was later named Christmas Day (December 25) in 1643 by Captain William Mynors, but was not settled until the late 19th century. 63% of the territory lies within Christmas Island National Park, which has several areas of priority monsoon forests.

Christmas Island lies between Australia's two states and territories (the other being the Cocos Islands and the Keeling Islands), where European Australians are a minority in the local population. The local culture is very similar to that of Singapore and was also part of that country in the past until it was transferred to Australia in 1958 at a cost of 20 million Australian dollars after Canberra requested this from the British government.
The last place in the world where New Year's Eve begins is Howland Island. When the countdown begins here, it will already be January 2nd elsewhere in the world. But no one will countdown, because there is no one to celebrate on this equatorial island lost in the Pacific. Howland Island is an uninhabited atoll (2.3 km) in the Pacific Ocean north of the equator and west of Kiribati.
