Claudia Sheinbaum’s farewell to the Executive Branch of Mexico City already has a date: it will be next Friday, June 16. This was announced by the head of government of the capital in a statement published on Monday, after the National Council of Morena had set June 16 as the deadline for the Corcholatas to resign from their public offices. The announcement comes amid hectic days of internal strife within Andrés Manuel López Obrador’s party. Sheinbaum wants to be selected for the 2024 presidential election among her classmates, Interior Minister Adán Augusto López; the Chancellor until this Monday, Marcelo Ebrard; and Senator Ricardo Monreal.
“I would like to inform you that I have made the decision to permanently resign from this position on June 16 of this year in order to become the first woman in the history of Mexico to direct the destiny of the nation and to continue to do so” Own seal for the great transformation work that President Andrés Manuel López Obrador has initiated,” said Sheinbaum this Monday, accompanied by his entire cabinet. “I am making this decision because I believe that I am the only person who will take part in the survey who has a career in science and at the same time is involved in the fight for the rights of the Mexican people, for democracy, freedoms, social justice and environment, women’s rights since I was 15,” she added.
Morena announced this Sunday that candidates for the candidacy had less than a week to withdraw and register to take part in the proceedings. The choice of candidate is made through a multi-question poll designed to measure the population’s perception of the “traits” of the participating characters. The questionnaire will be rolled out across the country, made available to the public – which Ebrard had urged – and conducted by the party’s commission of inquiry, which will conduct the poll between August 28 and September 3. Three days after this deadline, the final results will be announced.
It is still unclear who will succeed the head of government in the capital administration. The city’s government secretary, Martí Batres, was nominated to replace Sheinbaum. But the cabinet team is divided. And other names pop up, too, like Luz Elena González Escobar, the city’s current finance minister. As the President planned this Monday in his morning conference, the replacement bottle caps must be determined this week.
